The Queensland Government has allocated $42.5 million of critical relief to sports clubs affected by Cyclone Alfred and West Queensland flooding.
Queensland Sports Club Recovery Grant Supports Local Communities
The Sport and Recreation Recovery Grant will assist eligible non-profit organisations and local governments to rebuild and future-proof damaged infrastructure, restoring sport’s role in empowering community wellbeing. The funding also helps communities heal and reconnect after recent disasters.
Cyclone Alfred and West Queensland Flooding Devastate Facilities
In March, Cyclone Alfred tore through Brisbane and Gold Coast, cutting power to 330,000 homes and causing $1.38 billion in insured damages. Sports clubs across South East Queensland sustained significant damage.
Between March and May, flooding ravaged West Queensland. The Bureau of Meteorology estimated its effect spanned about a million square kilometres, of this, 4000 kilometres of road and over 3000 kilometres of private fencing were destroyed. Many local clubs lost playing fields, clubhouses, and equipment, leaving communities without recreational spaces for months.
In a response, Sports Minister Tim Mander stressed the need to “return every community to normal life quickly, including our local sporting organisations.”
Funding Accelerates Rebuilding and Community Engagement
The fund offers up to $1 million per eligible organisation to rebuild critical infrastructure. Cr. Mark Hammel of the City of Gold Coast praised the support, noting it strengthens communities. The grant will accelerate repairs and encourage participation, benefiting both physical health and social cohesion.
Sports facilities are a cornerstone of local community, especially in rural West Queensland. Clubs consolidate community ties and exert indirect positive externalities. Investments also benefit education, youth engagement, and mental health programs.
Applications are open from November 6 to February 6, clubs must meet criteria from the Queensland Department of Sport, Racing, and Olympic and Paralympic Games. Early applications increase chances for funding and rebuilding support.
