
Barcelona’s El Clasico win against arch rivals Real Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League was watched by a record-breaking audience on DAZN’s YouTube channel worldwide.
The quarter-final second leg match reached more than 1.8 million live viewers on DAZN’s Women’s Champions League YouTube channel.
This figure was up on the impressive audience from the first leg, where more than 1.3 million viewers tuned into see Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-1 at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium.
DAZN signed a four-year deal with UEFA ahead of the 2021/22 season, giving them the rights to showcase all matches from the elite European women’s club football competition on a dedicated YouTube channel for the first two seasons of the contract.
The sports streaming service also confirmed that the competition’s four quarter-final first-leg matches drew a combined audience total of 3.2 million viewers on YouTube.
In terms of growth on a digital footprint front, ahead of the first leg matches, DAZN had around 150,000 subscribers on YouTube, adding 42,000 over the course of the first round of quarter-final fixtures. DAZN’s UEFA Women’s Champions League YouTube channel now has over 260,000 subscribers.
The positive news from the broadcast side of things comes after confirmation that Barcelona’s 5-2 home win over Real was played in front of 91,533 fans, setting a new attendance record for a worldwide women’s football match.
The previous highest turnout for a women’s club game came in 2019 when 60,739 saw Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Alexia Putellas, one of the Barcelona goal scorers in the 5-2 win, said post-match: “I’m speechless. It’s a dream come true.
“I saw a lot of girls, children with that spark in their eyes. It’s amazing to be part of history.”
